Why Martingales?
I shortly noticed after I adopted my dog Ellington from the Animal Protection Society of Durham in 2010 just how strong willed and stubborn (notoriously) bully breeds can be. Add that with his giant head and neck about the same width, I found myself chasing him throughout the neighborhood when he would back out of his collar on walks to get to something more interesting such as a stray cat, another dog, a stranger he wanted to make friends with.. ect. When I adopted my boxer mix Lily, I noticed the same problem even though she has a skinnier neck. That is when I discovered the Martingale.
Martingales offer more control than your typical snap collar and you do not have to worry about a snap breaking. These martingales consist of sturdy polyester webbing material with a metal ring at each end. A separate loop of material passes through the two rings. The leash attaches to a ring on this loop. When your dog tries to back out of the martingale, the collar tightens around his/her neck. If the collar is properly adjusted, it will tighten just to the size of your dog's neck and won't choke him like a self tightening choke collar.
I foster dogs and have discovered that it works great on all dogs, big and small when you need additional control and safety. No one wants their pet backing out of a collar and risking running into traffic.
